If you have an audio product that has served you well throughout the years, such as a beloved turntable for all you vinyl lovers, it can be difficult to part with when its performance begins to decline. That’s where our upgrade services come in – we’ll dress your item with brand new parts to help it get back to the quality it once was, and better!
Read below about a recent upgrade we performed on a customer’s REGA turntable…
The REGA P25 was a very popular turntable back when it was first launched, but after nearly 20 years of use, one of our wonderful customers decided it was time to give his aging unit a new lease of life. It was upgrade time!
So, what needs upgrading?
After an in-depth one-to-one consultation with our fellow vinyl enthusiast, we advised that there are many upgrade parts to choose from. We will talk through each upgrade throughout this blog, but here is a summary of the parts we ended up using: REGA RB808 Tonearm, REGA DUAL 33 1/3 RPM Pulley, two REGA Upgrade Drive Belts, 24v Motor, REGA NEO Power Supply, new REGA Glass Platter, Michell Engineering Tecnoweight, Akromat 3mm Mat and new REGA Perspex dust cover.
Where did we start?
First things first – we removed the existing tonearm and old motor to make room for the new and improved parts.
Next up on the list – a new 24v motor and dual 33 1/3 pulley.
The new 24v motor has low noise and low vibration, designed and developed for REGA’s range of multi-award winning 24v turntables. The upgraded REGA drive belt is manufactured to the tightest tolerance and improves drive, stability and start up speed. There is also a sonic improvement to be gained from driving the sub platter using two drive belts with the dual pulley, which is due to an increase in pitch stability. We also remove and replace the old oil and bearing from underneath the subplatter.
REGA RB808 Tonearm and Michell Engineering Tecnoweight.
The RB808 has improved bearings and a tightened spindle fit tolerance over previous models (each bearing is individually selected to find the perfect match for the chosen spindle). This is a proven method of increasing the amount of detail retrieved from the record surface. The under-slung design of the Michell Tecnoweight effectively lowers the centre of gravity of the entire tonearm, making it more stable. The centre of mass of the counter weight is designed to be at the stylus level, thereby increasing the precision by which the stylus tracks the grooves in the record, giving greater performance from the cartridge and stylus and greatly reducing record wear.
Once the tonearm and Michell Tecnoweight have been fitted, we add the FunkFirm Achromat which absorbs energy and helps reduce colouration. We then setup the cartridge and tonearm to ensure that they are tracking precisely and at the correct weight so that the customer gets the best possible sound reproduction.
With all the new upgrades fitted to the turntable and connected to the Rega NEO PSU, the customer’s P25 has been completely transformed and with a new lease of life, with better sound than ever before! So, if you’re the proud owner of a REGA turntable, why not treat it to a few upgrades? We can assure you that every piece of equipment included in this case study adds a sonic benefit to be appreciated!
