Ortofon 2M Black MM Cartridge

The 2M Black is Ortofon’s flagship MM cartridge and is graced with a Shibata diamond stylus – the same diamond as on the acclaimed MC Jubilee. Its slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the groove walls and ensures notably detailed reproduction throughout the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove information.

The cartridge body used for the 2M Black is manufactured from a newly-developed Lexan DMX Piano Black, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances. The 2M Black uses a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver plated copper wire. The design has been optimised for ease of mounting the cartridge, weight and size to fit the most common turntables at the market today. The 2M Series provides excellent compatibility in an assortment of playback systems and with a wide variety of phono pre-amps.

The 2M series of cartridges feature Ortofon’s trademark split pole pins, an invention that enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response, as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon, and were originally presented in the 500 series and Super OM series. The 2M Series is developed in conjunction with the Danish designer Møller Jensen Design – the same designer who designed the award winning MC Jubilee and Kontrapunkt series. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality.

The name 2M was selected among several ideas. Ortofon wanted a modern name that would be easy to pronounce and to remember, and therefore an alpha numerical name was chosen. 2M means MM, which is the abbreviation for moving magnet.

The new 2M Black Verso is an alternative product for bottom mount tonearms. Users of the 2M Black will enjoy the benefit of impeccable sound quality, along with reduced record & stylus wear and reduced distortion and phase error as a result of the diamond’s improved tracking geometry.

The new 2M headshell is a practical and elegant solution for our customers who wish for direct and easy mounting and replacement on their tonearm. The combination of 2M Headshell and 2M Series cartridge adds unique distinction to the turntable!

The headshell has a universal mount fitting a wide range of tonearms. (on Technics models please use the auxiliary weight which is vital in this case). The headshell body is manufactured from a special compound used for the medical industry, this ensures high rigidity while reducing unwanted vibration. The 2M Bronze PNP has an elegant hi-tech design and provides an exclusive plug-and-play solution. The headshell with a 2M cartridge pre-mounted provides correct Baerwald alignment with the Ortofon TA-110/210, likewise with the major part of tonearms with a universal mount.
