During our visit to The Bristol Hi-Fi Show earlier this year, we had the unexpected pleasure of listening to a pair of JL Audio subwoofers in a home cinema demonstration. JL Audio made a name for themselves in the U.K. back in the early 1990’s, with the introduction of a range of car audio subwoofers. In fact, I bought 10″ unit myself to accompany a pair MB Quart 3-way passive speakers that were custom installed within the front doors of my now recycled car. I opted for the JL 10″ unit over the more commonly known JBL (and many other products) as they seemed to produce tuneful low frequencies with musicality and finesse; something that is often overlooked in my opinion. Not only am I reminded of the fact that my hair was indeed a few shades darker back then, but also by the fondness of the gold ol’ JL Subwoofer and the music I enjoyed back in the day….
Moving forward more than 20 years to the present day and our trip to Bristol. John and I were rather surprised to discover that JL Audio have stepped in to the consumer market, and not only with both feet, but with their full body weight behind it too. A number of you will already be aware of our enthusiasm for integrating REL Acoustics’ subwoofers into two channel systems, as well as for home cinema use. Our belief in REL has not changed and will continue to be a key component within our recommended upgrade paths. Instead we see JL Audio products enhancing our conviction of why “every home should have one”.
We visited the show with the intention of finding a new product line up to introduce to Home Media, however an additional range of subwoofers was not on our radar. The JL Audio room was the last of many demonstrations for John and I during the show and we are both glad to have made the effort.
After a few discussions with the JL Audio U.K. distributor Audio Visual Technology Solutions (UK) and further product demonstrations, we are pleased to confirm that we are now the officially appointed JL Audio authorised stockist for the south east corner of the U.K.
With the refurbishment of our home cinema demonstration room now close to completion, we have opted for a JL Audio Fathom f110 subwoofer to accompany our KEF Reference Ci3160 in-wall loudspeakers. The JL Audio Automatic Room Optimization was put to use to see how effective the system is in conjunction with the calibration microphone. Once the set up was complete, we opted for two pieces of software to put the system through its paces. We used the the opening battle scene from ‘Master and Commander’ to test the strength and speed of the bass performance and ‘Adele Live At The Royal Albert Hall’ to test the musicality and articulation of the JL Audio Fathom f110.
The JL Audio Automatic Room Optimization system proved to be very effective and the multi channel soundtrack of our chosen titles was recreated in a very believable and emotive fashion. The depth and speed of delivery of the explosions from the battle scene in ‘Master and Commander’ were projected in to the room with absolute grip and without any over hang or bloom. Remarkable.
